New Delhi, July 21: In a landmark announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India will contribute one million dollars to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. This funding aims to bolster heritage conservation efforts, particularly in countries of the Global South.

Prime Minister Modi Announces Significant Contribution

Speaking at the inauguration of the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to preserving global heritage. He stated, “India considers the preservation of global heritage as its responsibility, and hence, we are providing support for heritage conservation not only in India but also in countries of the Global South.”

India’s support for international heritage conservation is evident in its efforts to assist in the preservation of significant sites such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Cham Temples in Vietnam, and Bagan Stupa in Myanmar.

Enhancing Global Heritage Conservation

Highlighting the purpose of the contribution, PM Modi said, “This grant will be used for capacity building, technical assistance, and the conservation of world heritage sites.” Additionally, a certificate program in world heritage management has been initiated in India to train young professionals in this field.

PM Modi also called for a collective effort to advance global heritage, stating, “Today, through the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee, India’s appeal is to come together to advance each other’s heritage.”

India’s Vision: Development and Heritage

The Prime Minister underscored India’s dual vision of modern development and heritage pride. He pointed out significant projects like the Vishwanath Corridor in Kashi, the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and the modern campus of the ancient Nalanda University as examples of India’s dedication to both development and heritage.

Historical and Scientific Heritage

PM Modi highlighted India’s rich heritage, blending history with science. He mentioned the engineering marvel of the Kedarnath Temple, constructed in the 8th century, and the rust-resistant iron pillar in Delhi, standing for 2000 years, as testimonies to India’s advanced historical engineering and metallurgy.

New Addition to UNESCO World Heritage List

In an exciting development, PM Modi announced that a historic site in northeast India, the “Maidam,” has been proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list. If accepted, it will become India’s 43rd World Heritage site and the first cultural heritage site from northeast India to achieve this status.

The 46th session of the World Heritage Committee marks a significant achievement for India, reflecting its commitment to preserving global heritage and fostering international collaboration in heritage conservation.

By pledging one million dollars to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, India reinforces its dedication to protecting and promoting global heritage for future generations.
