Malappuram, July 21: The state of Kerala is on high alert following the death of a 14-year-old boy due to the Nipah Virus. Kerala Health Minister Veena George reported that seven samples tested on Sunday have come back negative, yet a significant number of individuals remain under observation.

Current Status and Contact Tracing

As per the latest assessment, a total of 330 people are on the contact list of those who may have been exposed to the virus. Among them, 101 individuals are categorized as high-risk. This group includes 68 healthcare workers, and 7 individuals are currently in inpatient (IP) admission. Out of these, six were in direct contact with the deceased child, and one individual, although showing symptoms, has no epidemiological link but has also tested negative.

The Health Department continues its rigorous work of testing and monitoring. In the Paandikad panchayat, which is the epidemiological center, 307 houses were checked, revealing 18 fever cases, none of which have links to the deceased boy. Similarly, in Aanakkayam panchayat, 310 houses were visited, with 10 fever cases reported, all without an epidemiological connection.

Details of the Nipah Virus Case

The 14-year-old boy who succumbed to the Nipah Virus was admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital with symptoms of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES). Despite medical efforts, he passed away on Sunday afternoon. Samples sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune confirmed the Nipah virus infection.

Government and Public Health Response

In response to the confirmed case, the Government of India has issued a press release advising immediate public health measures. These measures include active case search in the family of the confirmed case, the surrounding neighborhood, and areas with similar topography. The Centre has also recommended active contact tracing over the past 12 days, strict quarantine for contacts, isolation of suspects, and collection and transportation of samples for laboratory testing.

Public Advisory and Safety Measures

The public is advised to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols issued by health authorities. Those who experience symptoms or believe they have been in contact with infected individuals should seek medical attention promptly. Preventative measures such as maintaining hygiene, avoiding consumption of partially eaten fruits by bats, and adhering to quarantine guidelines are crucial in controlling the spread of the virus.
