Guwahati, July 31: Indian boxing sensation Lovlina Borgohain is now just one win away from securing a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Lovlina showcased her dominance in the women’s 75kg prelims by defeating Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad in the Round of 16.
Lovlina Borgohain’s Dominant Performance
Despite Hofstad’s initial attempts to unsettle Lovlina with quick punches, the Indian pugilist’s strategic use of jabs and a decisive right hook ensured she gathered crucial points in the first round. Lovlina’s height advantage played a significant role as she landed heavy blows, leaving Hofstad struggling to find a counter-strategy.
Unanimous Decision by Judges
In the subsequent rounds, Lovlina’s aggressive approach was evident. She landed strong blows on Hofstad’s face in the second round, further asserting her dominance. Although Hofstad, the World Youth Champion of 2022, attempted a comeback in the third round, it was too late. The judges ruled a unanimous 5-0 decision in favor of Lovlina.
Upcoming Quarterfinal Against Li Qian
Lovlina will face China’s number one seed, Li Qian, in the quarterfinal on August 4 at 15:02 IST. This match is highly anticipated as Qian previously defeated Borgohain at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games. A win in this bout would guarantee Lovlina her second Olympic medal, adding to the bronze she secured at Tokyo 2020.
