Tension Rises Along Indo-Bangla Border
New Delhi: The Border Security Force (BSF) has declared a high alert along the 4,096 km Indo-Bangla border as Bangladesh experiences a deepening crisis. The heightened alert, aimed at preventing anti-India elements from infiltrating, was confirmed by a senior BSF official on Monday.
Security Review by Acting DG Daljit Singh Chawdhary
In response to the escalating situation, acting BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary and other senior officials have arrived in Kolkata to oversee border security measures. The official stated, “Yes, a high alert has been sounded along the Indo-Bangla border. There is every possibility that anti-India activists might try to sneak into the country taking advantage of the present situation.”
Impact on Railway Services
Amid the chaos in Bangladesh, India’s Railway Ministry has canceled several train services between the two nations. This decision affects multiple train routes:
- Kolkata-Dhaka-Kolkata Maitree Express (13109/13110): Cancelled from July 19 to August 6.
- Kolkata-Dhaka-KOAA Maitree Express (13107/13108): Cancelled for the same period.
- Kolkata-Khulna-Kolkata Bandhan Express (13129/13130): Suspended until further notice.
- Dhaka-New Jalpaiguri-Dhaka Mitali Express (13131/13132): Cancelled since July 21, with the train currently stationed in Bangladesh.
Background of the Crisis
The alert follows the unexpected resignation of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has left Dhaka amid the turmoil. This sudden political change has heightened security concerns along the border, prompting immediate action from Indian authorities.
Travel Disruptions
Travelers should note that the Kolkata-Dhaka-Kolkata Maitree Express usually operates from Kolkata on Tuesdays and Fridays, and from Dhaka on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Due to the current suspension of services, passengers are advised to check for updates and make alternative travel arrangements.
In summary, the BSF’s high alert and the suspension of train services underscore the significant impact of the ongoing Indo-Bangla border crisis on security and cross-border travel.
