Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sounded the alarm over a significant decline in the Hindu population of Assam and Bangladesh. Addressing a gathering in Kamrup, Assam, Sarma cited official census data to underscore his concerns.

According to the Chief Minister, the Hindu population in Assam witnessed a decline of 9.23% between 1951 and 2011. The situation is even more pronounced in Bangladesh, where the Hindu population dropped by a substantial 13.5% during the same period.

Sarma expressed apprehension over a potential similar trend in neighboring states like West Bengal and Jharkhand. He stated, “Official census data up to 2011 of both places (Assam and Bangladesh) demonstrate a demographic shift. The situation in West Bengal and Jharkhand is expected to be similar.”

The Chief Minister’s remarks come amidst growing concerns over demographic changes in the region. While Sarma did not explicitly attribute the decline to specific factors, his statement has ignited discussions on the potential causes and implications of this trend.

The census data for 2021 is awaited, and it is expected to provide more detailed insights into the ongoing demographic shifts in both Assam and Bangladesh.
