Dehradun: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside a bus parked at Dehradun ISBT on August 13. The horrifying incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting swift action from the Uttarakhand Police.

An eight-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the matter, led by Superintendent of Police City (SP) Pramod Kumar. The decision to form the SIT underscores the sensitivity of the case and the need for a thorough investigation.

The victim, an orphan from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, was traveling alone on the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation bus from Delhi to Dehradun. The alleged gang rape took place at the ISBT parking lot. The accused have been identified as the bus driver, conductor, and three other individuals.

Police have arrested five accused in connection with the case based on CCTV footage and subsequent interrogation. All five have confessed to the crime. The SIT will be seeking custodial remand of the accused to strengthen the evidence.

The incident has sparked outrage and demands for stringent action against the perpetrators. The case highlights the urgent need for measures to ensure the safety of women and children, especially during travel.

The SIT has also formed a surveillance team to collect footage of the bus’s entire journey from Delhi to Dehradun to gather crucial evidence.

The case has been registered under Section 70(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 5(g)/6 of the POCSO Act.
