Guwahati, Feb 29: In preparation for the upcoming Assam Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its strategy, intending to contest in 11 out of 14 constituencies. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a press conference held at the party headquarters in Guwahati, revealed that the remaining three seats would be allocated to the party’s allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).

Sarma articulated that the AGP would field candidates in the Barpeta and Dhubri constituencies, while UPPL would present its candidate in Kokrajhar. Emphasizing the unity among the allies, Sarma mentioned that mutual support would be extended to each other’s candidates across all 14 constituencies.

The decision on seat-sharing was reached after a meeting between BJP’s state chief Bhabesh Kalita, Chief Minister Sarma, and the national leadership including J P Nadda, Amit Shah, and B L Santosh. Sarma elaborated that UPPL had requested the Kokrajhar seat, which was accepted by the BJP. Additionally, he conveyed the central leadership’s directive to AGP, requesting them to contest from two seats, to which AGP acquiesced.

Expressing optimism about electoral outcomes, Sarma stated, “Of the total 14 seats, we are optimistic of winning 11.” Notably, the BJP currently holds nine seats in the outgoing Lok Sabha from Assam, while AGP and UPPL do not have any representation. The Indian National Congress holds three seats, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) holds one, and one seat is held by an independent candidate.

As the political landscape in Assam gears up for the upcoming elections, the BJP’s decision on seat allocation and alliance dynamics is anticipated to shape the electoral narrative significantly.
