Seven lesser known facts about Ma Kamakhya temple

Ma Kamakhya temple is located atop Nilachal Hill in Assam’s capital town Guwahati

The Kalika Purana says that Kamakhya Temple denotes the spot where Sati used to retire in secret to satisfy her amour with Lord Shiva.

However, the Kamakhya temple also referred to as the place where Goddeses Sati’s yoni (genitals, womb) fell after Shiva tandav (dance of destruction) with the corpse of Sati.

Some historians however, are of the opinion that Kamakhya temple is an ancient sacrificial site for Khasi Goddesses, Ka-Meikha , which is supported by the Khasi folklores.

Structurally dating back to 8th or 9th century, a portion of the temple was destroyed during Hussein Shah's invasion of the Kamata kingdom (1498).

Koch king Vishwa Singha started reviving the temple but his son King Nara Narayan completed the reconstruction of the temple.

Nara Narayan’s brother and Commander of the Koch Army Chilarai himself supervised the construction of the temple.
