National Desk, Jan 30: A fierce gun battle erupted between security forces and Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of three CRPF personnel and injuries to 14 others. The incident took place in Tekalgudem village, located on the border between Bijapur and Sukma districts, an area notorious for Maoist activity.
The CRPF team, along with Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) personnel, was conducting a search operation in the area to establish a Forward Operating Base (FOB). The Maoists launched a sudden attack in the afternoon, sparking the intense exchange of fire.
Officials fear the casualty figures could rise as the operation to evacuate the injured and neutralize the remaining Maoists continues. Notably, Tekalgudem was the site of a deadly Maoist ambush in April 2021, where 23 CRPF personnel were killed and 33 injured. The area remains a stronghold of Maoist commander Madvi Hidma, linked to several major attacks in the region.
This latest incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in combating Maoist insurgency in Chhattisgarh. The dense forests and remote locations provide Maoists with tactical advantages, while the complex socio-economic issues in the region fuel their recruitment and activities. The establishment of FOBs and effective counter-insurgency strategies are crucial for curbing Maoist violence and ensuring the safety of civilians and security personnel alike.
