Nainital, Uttarakhand, Feb 9: Communal tension gripped the Haldwani area of Nainital district on Thursday evening following violent clashes in Banbhoolpura amid an anti-encroachment drive. District authorities have imposed a curfew in Banbhoolpura and issued a ‘shoot-at-sight’ order against rioters.
The violence erupted around 4 pm as a joint team of District Administration and Police carried out the court-mandated anti-encroachment drive in Banbhoolpura. Reports indicate that a group of anti-social elements opposed the drive, pelting stones, causing arson, and allegedly firing at the police with illegal weapons. The situation prompted the immediate deployment of additional police forces, including support from central forces provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Uttarakhand’s Director General of Police (DGP) reported several injuries among police personnel and administration officials during the clashes. The injured are receiving treatment at hospitals, with no reported casualties as of now.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami convened an emergency meeting in response to the escalating violence. He assured the public that the situation is under control, emphasizing that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the unrest.
“In the days to come, the people behind the incident will be identified and action will be taken against them,” stated the CM.
Dhami also appealed to the public to maintain peace in the wake of the disturbances. “We have appealed to everyone to maintain peace. Curfew is in place,” he reiterated, emphasizing that strict action would be taken against rioters and encroachers involved in the violence.
The situation in Banbhoolpura remains tense but under control, as authorities work to restore calm and order in the affected area.
