Dhaka: In a significant political shift, Bangladesh’s Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman declared on Monday the formation of an interim government following the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This announcement comes in the wake of intense nationwide protests that led to severe unrest and casualties.

Army Chief Takes Charge

Waker-Uz-Zaman, dressed in military fatigues and a cap, addressed the nation via state television, stating, “I am taking full responsibility.” He emphasized the urgent need for stability and peace, given the extensive damage to the economy and the loss of lives over recent weeks. The general noted that it was not immediately clear if he would personally head the caretaker government.

“We will form an interim government,” he declared, confirming Hasina’s resignation. “The country has suffered a lot, the economy has been hit, many people have been killed — it is time to stop the violence. I hope after my speech, the situation will improve.”

Steps Towards Stability

Waker-Uz-Zaman assured that he would engage with the president to establish the interim government. He revealed that discussions had been held with key opposition parties and civil society members, excluding Hasina’s Awami League. The general’s focus was on restoring order and addressing the grievances that fueled the protests.

“If the situation gets better, there is no need for emergency,” he stated, promising that the new authorities would “prosecute all murders” that occurred during the protests.

Call for Calm

Addressing the youth, the army chief urged, “Now the task of the students is to keep calm and help us.” His appeal was aimed at stabilizing the nation and ensuring cooperation from all sectors of society.

Background of the Army Chief

Waker-Uz-Zaman, a career infantry officer, has nearly four decades of military experience. His service includes two tours as a UN peacekeeper and a tenure in the prime minister’s office. Appointed as the chief of army staff earlier this year, he is known for his mild demeanor and wears spectacles, complementing his green uniform adorned with medal ribbons.

The political landscape in Bangladesh is poised for significant changes as the interim government steps in to restore order and address the demands of the protesting masses. The focus now shifts to the upcoming steps by the interim administration to stabilize the country and pave the way for future governance.
