Guwahati, Feb 21: In a decisive move against illegal moneylending activities, the Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, disclosed that 122 individuals have been apprehended across the state. The crackdown, aimed at protecting vulnerable citizens, has resulted in the seizure of cash, loan agreements, gold jewelry, land mortgage documents, and bank records.

Chief Minister Sarma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to shielding the poor and middle-class citizens from the exploitative practices of unscrupulous lenders. He emphasized the necessity of persisting in such initiatives to safeguard the financial well-being of the populace.

Recent developments indicate a concerted effort by the authorities to curb illegal money lending. In a dawn raid conducted in Hajo, three moneylenders were arrested by a team led by Officer-In-Charge Nabajit Nath of the Hajo Police station. The individuals apprehended were identified as Taijuddin Ali (35), Azizur Rahman (45), and Mazibur Rahman (37).

During the operation, a significant cache of documents, multiple bank accounts, several mobile phones, and Rs 3,50,000 in unaccounted cash were seized by the police. Investigations are underway to uncover additional linkages and networks involved in illegal money lending activities.

This latest crackdown follows the arrest of two loan sharks in the Chirang district on February 18, underscoring the state’s determination to combat financial exploitation. Assam Police remains vigilant in its efforts to dismantle illegal money lending operations and ensure the protection of citizens from predatory practices.
