Gangtok, Feb 21: Troops from the Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army sprang into action to rescue 500 stranded tourists amidst heavy snowfall and inclement weather in Gangtok, Sikkim. The operation took place on February 21, as approximately 175 vehicles, carrying over 500 tourists, found themselves marooned at Natu La, East Sikkim, due to the sudden onslaught of heavy snowfall.

The Indian Army, known for its unwavering commitment to duty, promptly responded to the crisis. Braving sub-zero temperatures, troops rushed to the scene to assist the stranded tourists. Prompt medical aid, hot refreshments, meals, and safe transportation were provided to ensure the tourists’ well-being and facilitate their safe journey to their destinations.

“The TriShakti Corps, Indian Army, while diligently guarding the borders in Sikkim, remains ever-ready to assist the civil administration and the people,” stated the army spokesperson, emphasizing the Army’s dedication to serving the nation and its citizens.

This rescue operation comes amidst challenging weather conditions across the region. Earlier on February 20, in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, CRPF jawans also extended their support to vehicles stranded due to heavy snowfall. The region witnessed showers and snowfall, leading to the blockage of several roads, including the critical Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, due to landslides triggered by precipitation.

The collaborative efforts of the Indian Army and other security forces exemplify their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens, especially during adverse weather conditions. The timely response and effective execution of rescue operations underscore the invaluable role played by these forces in safeguarding the lives of individuals in distress.
